Square One Burgers

Posted by Tampa Bay Food Monster on April 26, 2011

alright. i’ve put this one off long enough. it’s time. for me. to write. about. square. one. burgers.

square one burgers

it’s a sit down burger restaurant. they got beer. a full bar. they’re hip. they have ingredients. there may be some TVs. there’s outdoor seating. they do swot perderder fries. what more could you ask for?

square one burgers interior

square one is a gourmet burger restaurant and bar. it’s located on henderson (that wacky angled street), just east of south dale mabry. don’t let the picture fool you – it’s actually got a pretty laid back atmosphere. but it is kinda fancy for a burger joint. i mean, look at those little dangly things. i don’t know what they’re for, but by god do they look classy.

so you’re sat down at a nice table, with your big group of friends. or sexy dinner partner. or by yourself. and you’re given these menus to look over. and it’s about then that you realize that these guys make some fancy friggin burgers. i mean, you got options. lots of options. for the meat alone, you get your choice of angus beef, kobe beef, buffalo, chicken, turkey, ostrich, portabello, sashimi tuna steak, and veggie patty if you’re into that sort of thing. lots of things to pick from. and some damn fine options. tuna steak burger? aw hellz yeah. ostrich? okay, maybe. and dat kobe beef.

think it over. grab a beer.

orange blossom pilsner

aw yeah. beer. i ordered a beer. of some sort. and that’s what they served me. this particular sort of beer was an orange blossom pilsner, a delightful honey beer born in orlando. it’s not nearly as sweet as you’d imagine, and the honey flavor is more subtle than i was expecting. pretty good. it is perfectly drinkable, and i feel like it is crafty enough not to make you look like a pansy if you order it. probably. but if you DO get beaten up, don’t blame me.

fried pickles

square one burger introduced me to the taste sensation that is fried pickles. since then, i’ve had them at numerous other locations. but square one’s are still my favorite. they are lightly battered, such that sometimes the batter separates from the pickle. they’re fried until crisp, and not heavy at all for something coming out of a fryer. they’re served with ranch. and they’re just perfect. god i love these.

square one wings

this visit was the first time i had tried the “sq 1 really big chicken wings”. i had never even thought about getting wings there until then. and i was really glad i tried them. i got a small order of six, and they come in three styles: buffalo, frickin’ hot sweet chili, or bar-b-que. i went with buffalo, but cannot even remember there being a buffalo flavor involved. that’s because i was so overwhelmed by their smokey goodness. square one’s wings are apparently smoked in-house, and smoked is what you get. all i could think of when i ate these were those giant turkey legs you get at renaissance festivals. perhaps there was a bit of spice to it? i can’t remember. but they were good. they weren’t fall off the bone smokey like the wings at copper top, but they were tender and meaty. maybe not “really big”. and definitely not traditional wings. but damn good.

so at this point, of course i had already worked up my courage to order the best possible burger i could come up with for that evening. every time i go here, i get something different, but each time it is delicious. this time was no exception.

my square one burger

majestic. i know. it’s a beautiful monstrosity. let me see if i can remember all the goodness featured here: kobe beef patty, kaiser bun, sooner sauce (a chipotle ranch) and chipotle ketchup, pepper jack cheese, grilled red onion, lettuce, pickles, avocado, and applewood-smoked bacon. that is, i believe, all that was involved. there may have been sauteed sweet peppers, but i doubt it. all that matters is that it was awesome. the meat is always very good here (especially the kobe, which i invariably get). i cannot say it beats out burger monger, but it’s still great. their toppings are what really do it for me. i mean, the variety lets you get really creative, and every single piece of the puzzle is perfect. fresh, high quality produce, cheeses, and sauces.

this particular burger was excellent. i really like getting a ketchup/guacamole combination on burgers (no guac, square one?? come on!), so the avocado filled that role along with the chipotle ketchup. which, in turn, is a bit tangy, and blends well with the sooner sauce. the onions were extra flair, lettuce was unnecessary but nice, pickles are always a must for me. pepper jack is the king of cheese. bacon makes everything better. it all came together really well. i maybe should have gotten jalapeños to make it spicy, but it was just fine without. i got it with their sweet potato fries, lightly sweet by nature, then given a cinnamon sugar sprinkling. very good, but not so different from regular fries that it messes up the meal. next to my savory burger, it was a great compliment.

but the meal did not end there! oh no. there was more food to be had. by all.

orange creamsicle shake

oh god i ordered an orange dreamcicle shake. it was delicious. frothy and thick. with whipped cream. i love orange freezes from steak ‘n shake, which became my go to shake after they discontinued the delicious lime freeze (RIP). this was excellent, creamier than steak ‘n shake’s freeze with its blend of orange and vanilla.

red velvet cupcake sundae

and one of my friends ordered the southern red velvet sundae. one of the best parts of square one is their desserts, specifically their cupcakes. they make these little mini-cupcakes in a variety of flavors (red velvet, vanilla, chocolate, and carrot pecan). they’re all great. for the sundae, they scoop some ice cream, toss in a couple cupcakes (complete with a rich cream cheese frosting), housemade hot fudge, and whipped cream with little sugar sprinkles. it’s really good. but i only had a bite. because i was stuffed. why the hell did i eat so much??

of course, i’d do it all again. i would, and i will. square one burgers is a favorite spot of mine, and if it weren’t so far away, it’d be a much more regular spot. the prices are fair for what you’re getting, and the place is really nice. it’s a good alternative to the more straight to the point burger places i’m used to, adding class and character to some really delicious gourmet burgers. 38 stars.

Hungry Harry’s Famous Bar-B-Que

Posted by Tampa Bay Food Monster on November 8, 2010

hungry harry's entrance

hungry harry’s famous bar-b-que. this is some hardcore barbecue shit right here. this is the good stuff. real barbecue. hungry harry’s actually is famous in land o’ lakes, as the home of land o’ lakes’ best smoked barbecue. and the title is well earned; hungry harry’s has been around for 26 years, and they continue to do barbecue right.

i went with a friend recently, and i’m ashamed to say it was my first time there, though i’ve definitely heard of it, and noticed its giant painted roof sign and huge smoker chimney each time i drove past it on 41, north of SR 54. we entered the small building and were greeted and told we could sit wherever we wanted. we chose our table, and looked over the menu.

my eyes were instantly drawn to the HE-MAN PLATTER, with an amount of food almost as ridiculous as its name: four large ribs, 1/3 a pint of pork (yes, meat is measured in pints here), 1/3 a pint of beef, half a pint of baked beans, half a pint of cole slaw, four pieces of garlic bread, and a pint of barbecue sauce. oh, and half a chicken. all this for only 27 bucks. my friend quickly talked me out of it, which was for the best, but damn… that’s one hell of a meal, for a great price. but i suppose that gorging myself to death wasn’t in the cards for me that day. instead i settled for this:

country rib platter

the country rib platter. all platters come with either a corn muffin or garlic bread, and then two additional sides. i went with garlic bread, and then i ended up getting the corn muffin as one of my sides, with baked beans as the other. and this specific platter came with three large “country style” ribs, delicious, tender, and a bit fatty smoked pork ribs. they are prepared with a dry rub on them, but that is about the extent of seasoning before they come to you, in order to allow you to choose your sauces as you wish. the garlic bread was delicious, with strong garlic and butter flavor while still maintaining a toasted crispness. perfect. the corn muffin was also quite good, nice and sweet, although a bit small. the baked beans definitely left something to be desired, though; they were very plain and rather dry.

chopped pork

of course i couldn’t stop there; i had to get more food. MORE FOOD! i ordered a half pint of chopped pork, which was tender and delicious. it retained a lot more of the smokey flavor than the ribs, which definitely worked for it. i didn’t care for it quite as much as the ribs, but that’s not to say anything against the pork… i just generally prefer ribs. but both were delicious, and next time i go there, i’ll have a hard time not just ordering the same meats.

of course, the meats don’t have to stand on their own. they do, but they don’t have to. and after tasting harry’s barbecue sauces, you won’t let them.

hungry harry's homemade sauces

hungry harry’s offers no less than SIX different types of barbecue sauces for you to choose from. that’s two or three more than any other barbecue places i’ve ever been. and they are each delicious and unique in their own way. the flavors are: the standard sweet and mild barbecue, a hot barbecue, two mustard barbecue sauces (one regular and one spicy), and their “land o’ lina” vinegar sauce. they were each worth sampling, and i would go as far as to say that i could have gotten through the entire meal with any one of them. but of course i had my favorites.

their three standard barbecue sauces were all very good, and all very different. the sweet was a nice honey-laden flavor, the mild was a good solid regular barbecue sauce, and the hot barbecue was surprisingly peppery, a take on the flavor i have never had before. the mustard barbecue sauces were exquisite, as they usually are, with a deep, smokey flavor, though there was not much difference between the two outside of the spiciness. the vinegar sauce was something completely new to me, a strong vinegar flavor mixed with more traditional barbecue sauce seasonings. i really enjoyed it, and could definitely see having a chopped pork sandwich just drenched in the stuff. my only complaint was that it wasn’t as strong as i’d have liked.

i ended up mostly switching back and forth between the hot barbecue, and a combination of the sweet barbecue and the spicy mustard, as recommended by our server, which provided the perfect sweet/spicy combination. each of the sauces are available for individual sale, and i will likely go back and pick some up.

this was an incredible meal, and of course i couldn’t finish. i washed it all down with so much endless sweet tea, the perfect compliment to any barbecue dinner. i would love to go back, and i’ll probably end up trying their half a chicken one of these days. i found that i left the restaurant in a hazy drunken barbecue stupor, as one should after a wonderful barbecue dinner. highly recommended.

HOLIDAY UPDATE: hungry harry’s is currently offering up a full thanksgiving menu for those too lazy to cook their own stuff, or just interested in a turkey smoked by some of the best smokers in the area.

Cole’s BBQ

Posted by Tampa Bay Food Monster on September 16, 2010

so i’m a big fan or barbechu. it’s one of the ultimate ways to enjoy meats. so simple, yet so brilliant. devastatingly, it’s been quite some time since i’ve had some decent barbecue, so i set out to resolve that issue.

cole's bbq

we hit up cole’s bbq on palm pointe drive, just south of i75 and bruce b. downs. my friend has been there many, many times, and highly recommended it. it’s a little place, looking fresh and new among the rest of the ever expanding plaza, and it just recently opened in april. there are a few tables and chairs, seating about thirty inside, but they do carry out and catering. it is family owned, which is always nice to hear. the staff is really friendly and helpful. there are some televisions set up around the inside, playing football games, football games, and football games. but honestly, i don’t care about any of that. i just want some barbecue!!!

and barbecue they had. they had a good menu of just about every type of barbecue you could want – turkey, chicken, beef, pork. they had wings and ribs, and sandwiches. and they had a few combo meals, and a lunch special. also: SWEET TEA. so i ordered up some sweet tea, and we got started out on some of their wings (of course!).

cole's hot wings

cole’s offers either smoked or fried (we opted for fried at my friend’s request, although i certainly would have liked to try smoked), and you can get it with their sweet barbecue sauce, hot barbecue sauce, or mild barbecue sauce. we went with the hot sauce, which turned out to be a great choice – it was hot enough to want to have a drink after finishing with one, but not so much that it inhibited the experience. they were nice and crispy on the outside, with a smokey flavor on the inside (i guess they smoke them then fry them). the outside had parts that almost seemed charred to me, which i liked quite a bit. and they were a decent sized wing. i really enjoyed them, although they are not what you’d think of as a traditional buffalo wing by any stretch of the imagination.

cole's bbq lunch special - turkey sandwich with potato salad, and an order of baked beans.

my friend ordered the lunch combo, which was a sandwich and a side of potato salad or cole slaw. she went with a turkey sandwich, and the potato salad, and ordered a side of baked beans. i tried the turkey, and it was really good; it was tender, like all their meats, with a rich smokey flavor. on each table are three bottles of their different barbecue sauces, and adding them to the sandwich is a must (which comes without any sort of sauce on it). but it’s just about five or six bucks for the meal, which is a good deal considering that this is REAL barbecue.

cole's bbq combo with ribs and chopped pork, and baked beans

and HERE is the main event! i ordered the two meats, one side combo. i chose ribs and chopped pork as my meats, and baked beans for my side (other options: collard greens, macaroni and cheese, green beans, potato salad and coleslaw). and the plate came with a slice of toasty garlic bread. i think i made the right choice here.

the meat, all the meat, was nice and tender, smokey, and delicious. the ribs were my favorite, having been prepared with a dry rub on the outside, giving it a nice salty taste and a rough texture. they were cooked perfectly, moist on the inside. the chopped pork was really good too, and there was quite a bit of it hidden underneath the ribs. it was a little bit dry, so it needed the sauce, but the sauces were all so good you wouldn’t be eating without them anyway. i kept switching between the sauces, each with their own unique qualities. near the end, i just started mixing them all together, so i could get a nice combination of the hot and sweet, along with the savory flavor of the mild.

the baked beans were also REALLY good, nice and sweet and thick. i wish i had gotten a full bowl of them like my friend had… i could have kept eating them for a while. and the garlic toast was actually really good too! i wasn’t expecting much from it, but it was perfectly toasted and had a great buttery garlic taste.

this place is spectacular. it’s not really the greatest hangout in the world, but their food is the best barbecue i’ve had from a restaurant. i will no doubt be returning to sample the rest of their menu.
