Freeze & Shake Cocktails: Myer’s Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri

Posted by Tampa Bay Food Monster on May 20, 2011

Vodka & Lemonade | Piña Colada | Strawberry Daiquiri | Mudslide

i was recently asked to review the new freeze & shake cocktails, from the makers of smirnoff, captain morgan, baileys, and guinness (just to name a few brands). i will review all of the freeze and shake frozen cocktails over the course of this four part series, and, in doing so, i will get trashed.

the third frozen cocktail drink thing i tried from the set is the strawberry daiquiri. ahhh strawberry daiquiris… a drink fit for a bitch! and i love me a bitch drink. seriously. what could be better? it’s like having candy, AND getting drunk! candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker? go to hell, ogden nash!! now we can have both. and you thought you were so clever.

i let this one thaw out for a long time, as i’ve been keeping these things in a chest freezer that may be designed to stay colder than a standard refrigerator/freezer combination deal. by the time i got to it, it was smooth all the way through. a bit too smooth, mayhaps? mayhaps not! it poured well into the glasses, but retained a certain freezy/frozone quality that you expect in a frozen drink. in fact, this was probably the ideal consistency for these things. totally drinkable, but still icy. nicey.

myer's frozen strawberry daiquiri

the frozen strawberry daiquiri made use of the same rum as the piña colada, which is alright rum. not the best. mercifully, this time around, the blend of alcohol and “taste-juices” was perfect, resulting in a cocktail that was completely tolerable. yes! so the “final solution” is waiting for these things to defrost, or not freezing them to the point of solidity. take note of that.

as i said before, i like strawberry daiquiris. it’s a fun drink! this, however, was no strawberry daiquiri. unlike the other frozen cocktails, this one had so little flavor, all you were really tasting was the rum. it was balanced, as i said, so it wasn’t overpowering; this was the easiest to drink of all the cocktails as far as alcohol was concerned. but the strawberry was practically non-existent here! it didn’t taste like much of anything at all. so instead of the flavoring taking a back seat to the alcohol as before, this time it was like they didn’t even bother putting the flavoring in at all. lame. completely lame. good thing i like rum, or else this would have been a total waste.

in spite of the daiquiri’s disappointing lack of flavor, i proceeded to down to whole shaker, became belligerent, danced, then passed out. when i came to, i found the majority of my valuables destroyed, and my bed on fire. the freeze and shake cocktail had done its job… but at what cost?

Freeze & Shake Cocktails: Myer’s Frozen Piña Colada

Posted by Tampa Bay Food Monster on April 28, 2011

Vodka & Lemonade | Piña Colada | Strawberry Daiquiri | Mudslide

i was recently asked to review the new freeze & shake cocktails, from the makers of smirnoff, captain morgan, baileys, and guinness (just to name a few brands). i will review all of the freeze and shake frozen cocktails over the course of this four part series, and, in doing so, i will get trashed.

next up in my freezy/drinky adventure after the vodka-tastic vodka & lemonade is the myer’s frozen piña colada. i like a piña colada! it’s a solid drink. i like coconut. i like pineapple. and i like rum! friggin’ piña coladas. it’s like jesus came to me and said “you know what, buddy? you’ve been alright. i’mma give you a treat.” and then he pooped out piña colada. huzzah! my beliefs are affirmed (my belief in getting drunk before noon)!

this time around, having learned from my errors, i let the shaker thaw out a bit before squeezing and shaking. unfortunately, i may have let it thaw for a bit too long. it was really easy to squeeze, which scared me. shaking it confirmed that this was going to be a much looser, much wetter drink than before. which is fine by me; i love when things are _____ and ___. (mouse over for the answer! surprise!)

unfortunately, i ran into a little kink. as i poured the drink into my glass, the flow abruptly stopped. there was a large frozen core in the center of the shaker, which was obstructing the flow. this same thing had happened to me last time as well, but while this time i was able to violently shake it into something pourable, last time i didn’t have that luxury, and had to struggle to get the drink out. this is not a huge complaint or anything, but it does factor into things. if the drink freezes in such a way that the center is fairly solid every time, it makes it somewhat less convenient and simple to use this product. also, i would wager that the frozen core is mostly the flavoring, whereas the more liquid parts are going to be the alcohol, which freezes at a lower temperature than the rest of the drink. so the mix isn’t going to be the right ratio unless the entire thing is blended perfectly. just something to note.

myer's frozen piña colada

i enjoyed the piña colada much more than the frozen lemonade. this is mostly due to my preference of rum over vodka. the liquor in this drink was about as strong as the vodka was in the lemonade (both 13% alcohol), but to me it felt much more balanced. you throw vodka in lemonade, and you’re just spiking it. but a piña colada is a cocktail, in which rum is a regular, important factor. a virgin piña colada is not a piña colada. so though it was strong in alcohol, it felt right. there was not too much alcohol, just enough to feel it in the beginning every sip. then it would settle nicely into a not-too-sweet, not too fruity coconut/pineapple flavor. a satisfying finish. a great balance.

the flavors were not incredible, though. the rum was alright, but definitely not my favorite. the piña colada mix tasted just like that – a mix. it was not fresh tasting, it did not taste particularly authentic. not like real fruit was blended in front of me. but it was about what i was expecting.

the consistency was less satisfying this time, which i attribute to having let it sit out for longer than i should have. the frozen bits were a bit flaky rather than having a smooth texture throughout, and they kind of filled up the more wet melted parts of the drink. i was disappoint. but i blame myself.

i still preferred this drink to the lemonade, solely based on liquor. i would take a crappy well rum drink over a name brand vodka drink any day. and this was not crappy. it was decent. i was happy with the way it came out – it looked and felt like what you’d get from a restaurant. the flavor didn’t match up to that, but it was not bad. still a fun and convenient drink.

Freeze & Shake Cocktails: Smirnoff Frozen Vodka & Lemonade

Posted by Tampa Bay Food Monster on April 20, 2011

Vodka & Lemonade | Piña Colada | Strawberry Daiquiri | Mudslide

i was recently asked to review the new freeze & shake cocktails, from the makers of smirnoff, captain morgan, baileys, and guinness (just to name a few brands). i will review all of the freeze and shake frozen cocktails over the course of this four part series, and, in doing so, i will get trashed.

WHO DOESN’T LIKE GETTING DRUNK? i know i do. all the time. cripplingly so. if i can remember my name the next day, i didn’t drink enough. let’s put it this way: i am an alcoholic. i present a danger to myself and everyone around me. and i think it’s damn cool.

…okay some of, if not all of that is a lie. i enjoy drinking, but not to a fault. there’s just not enough time in the day for that. or at least there wasn’t… until now. why waste your time mixing one of your famous frozen alcoholic beverages, all that pouring and measuring and blending, hoping to get the equation just right, when you could be spending that time getting shit faced?? freeze & shake cocktails do all that tedious work for you, allowing you to sit back, relax, and destroy your many extraneous brain cells with ease.

“but how??” i hear you asking, desperate and ravenous. observe the following:

outside of a little shaking, the job is done for you. excellent. they use a balance of alcohol, water, and sugar such that the drinks freeze in a freezer, but not completely. they also assure us that “each product only uses food grade ingredients”, which is nice, except the thought hadn’t crossed my mind that they might be using chemicals until they brought it up. eh. anyway, after freezing, you’re left with an icy slush, and after a bit of manipulation, you have a perfectly drinkable frozen beverage. it’s clearly witchcraft.

i begin my quest for frozen slushes with the smirnoff® frozen vodka & lemonade. ®. it had been sitting in my freezer for a while, well over the 8 hour minimum the product specifies. i excitedly squeezed away at it, mimicking the promotional video i had seen on their website, hoping to have as much fun as the actors in it appeared to. when that didn’t do much for me, i went ahead with the shake phase, making sure to dance more than mix. though i quickly broke into a sweat and looked like a fool, i found that my efforts had not done the trick; the slush was near impossible to get out of the mixer. i tried to squeeze the drink out, delighting in the near-fart sounds it would make, but only getting small chunks out at a time. the majority remained frozen in the mixer. i pouted.

it wasn’t until later that i actually read the back, where it stated you may want to leave the mixer out for 10 minutes to thaw after freezing. whoops.

after struggling, violently squeezing, hands frostbitten and blackening, i was able to pour out enough of the cocktail to consider it a serving.

smirnoff frozen vodka & lemonade

the packaging says it contains about five 5 oz servings. 5 oz doesn’t seem like much to me, but at least they sort of make up for it by giving you a fairly generous 13% alcohol. works for me! you can taste it. if you don’t like the taste of vodka, this is not going to be the drink for you. i do not like vodka. but at least you know it’s in there. the vodka is complimented by lemon juice and other natural flavors, and “certified color” (??), making up the lemonade portion of the drink. but this is not like a frozen hard lemonade – this is a cocktail. if you’re a pussy, you’re not going to be happy with this drink. if not, you’re probably going to enjoy this! it’s totally drinkable, and it’s not super sweet or anything like a lemon drop. you could probably down the whole mixer and feel pretty good about yourself.

the consistency was pretty damn good. it froze properly, and even after a really long time in the freezer, and not having let it thaw, it was completely drinkable. i was pretty happy about this. now, it’s not as smooth as, say, an icee, but i don’t think that’s possible without sacrificing many virgins to many different deities (something as perfect as an icee has to be evil). it’s exactly what it’s supposed to be. and not having to do any real preparation to make this happen has me sold on the concept. it’s easy and convenient. you could have a picnic with these, and you’d be getting the same thing you’d expect from a restaurant.

these bad boys are priced at around 14 dollars per mixer. that’s a little less than three dollars per serving, which isn’t too bad. again, the convenience is what sells me on it. personally, i wouldn’t buy the smirnoff® vodka brand® lemonade® freezy, but that is solely due to my deep hatred of vodka. i am still really excited about the other drinks i have left to try out.

oh, and on a final note, i did not get drunk from this frozen cocktail. or, if i did, i couldn’t feel it past my meth high. laaaaaame.
